Threads Character Limit 2026: Posts, Bio & Text Attachments
Threads, Meta's text-based platform launched to compete directly with Twitter/X, gives you 500 characters per post — nearly double Twitter/X's 280. Here's every Threads character limit for 2026.
Threads Character Limits
| Field | Limit |
|---|---|
| Standard post | 500 characters |
| Text attachment | 10,000 characters |
| Bio | 150 characters |
| Username | 30 characters |
| Display name | 30 characters |

Why 500 Characters, Not 280?
Threads standard posts allow 500 characters, and a text attachment feature extends that to 10,000 characters for longer-form content within the same post — a deliberate design choice that positions Threads for slightly more substantial commentary than Twitter/X's famously terse 280-character format, while still staying well short of a full blog post.

Writing for Threads' Longer Limit
- 500 characters gives room for a complete thought, but the platform still rewards concise, scannable writing over dense paragraphs
- Use the extra space for context or a follow-up point rather than padding — Threads' algorithm still favors posts that generate quick replies
- Since Threads integrates closely with Instagram, cross-posting from an Instagram caption often needs trimming to fit comfortably, not expanding
